Hello friends!

It’s getting hot here in Tokyo, hot like Woodstock… here we go.

My pick for today is…

2006-2007 Gibson Custom Shop Alvin Lee ES-335 (Cherry).

Yes, Alvin Lee’s iconic “Big Red”.

I’m one of those guitar heads that was blown away by Alvin’s shredding on “I’m Going Home”. No doubt I’m excited about this one. I just love the rad look of this guitar with the HSH configuration, and the TP-6 tailpiece that was thrown on there to replace a Bigsby, not to mention the replicated stickers that reminds us of the old hippie days. These features show the rock side of ES-335s.

But how does it actually sound? With a guitar that has the HSH configuration, you might be a little worried about the volume balance of each pickup, but there’s no need. They work together great. The independent volume control for the middle single-coil enables you to activate all three pickups at once when the toggle switch is in the center position, and the clean tone is beautiful. It sounds like it’s got a natural limiter that really makes those arpeggios and rhythm playing. The center single-coil is loaded slightly to the bridge side and has an edginess that is somewhat different from what you hear in Strats. You can hear the semi-hollow airiness, and the wide variety of tone that this guitar has is actually quite impressive. A little dirt will really bring out the bridge pickup’s edginess, very reminiscent of Alvin’s tone. His signature light-speed passages would really cut through, and even the power chords and low note riffs don’t lose the ragged texture of the wound strings.

As I mentioned in the beginning, this is a guitar for you guitar heads.
