Hello friends!

My pick for today is…

2012 Fender Custom Shop TB ’60 Stratocaster Heavy Relic (Black).

Here’s an interesting Strat I want to share with you today.

Black is a common color for a Strat nowadays, but back in the 60’s, it was a custom color that was not offered on catalog color chart. There’s your historical trivia, but this isn’t why I’m saying this guitar is interesting. What IS interesting is that they used lightweight ash for the body although a ’60 Strat would normally use alder, especially when you’ve got a non-transparent finish like black.

The good thing with this ash body is that it’s more lightweight than alder. 7.4 lbs is definitely lighter than an average 60’s Strat with an alder body (good thing they didn’t use white ash like they did in the 70’s. They’re total back breakers). Some of you may feel a little uncomfortable with a ’60-style Strat having an ash body, but wait until you try it. Thanks to the black-bobbin pickups, the low-midrange hump that is unique to early 60’s Strats is still there, but the overall resonance is nicely balanced having just the right amount of brightness to compensate for the low-midrange, making it easier to use in band situations. The body has a nice ring like an alder body Strat, just in a different way.

The Heavy Relic treatment gives the guitar the look of a workhorse, and moreover, the smooth feel of the lacquer stripped neck might be something many players out there are looking for. This one is something worth checking out.
