【Staff Pick!】2015 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt ’66 Stratocaster Closet Classic by Yuriy Shishkov (Ocean Turquoise Metallic)

本日ご紹介するのは
このオーシャンターコイスメタリック、通常より少し色味が濃く緑が若干強くて、クローゼットクローゼット仕上げによるウェザーチェックの感じが実にいい雰囲気を醸し出していてぼくは気に入っています。’66スタイルなので、ラージヘッド、トランジションロゴというスペックで、中には60年代初期のスモールヘッド/スパゲティロゴじゃないとという方もいらっしゃいますが、個人的にはこの辺りも好きです。というかこの一本、結構好みです。
ギター選びにおいて難しく、そして面白い部分でもありますが、見た目と出音がそぐわないときってありますよね。見た目だけでどんな音が出るかなんて判断がつく訳もなく、見た目に惹かれて手に取ってみたものの、音を出してみたらがっかりなんていう経験、皆さんも一度くらいあるでしょう。稀にあまりにも見た目がカッコいいがためにどうしてこんな音しか出ないんだと嘆いてしまうことだってありますよね。
この楽器を手に取ってみて、弾き始めて数秒でそんな心配はどこかへ消え去りました。マスタービルトならではの出音です。ユーリ・シスコフ氏、お見事。グレイボビンピックアップのバランスの良さが気持ちよく、耳にツンツンくるような高音域ギラギラな音ではないく、それでいてグレイボビンらしいキラキラした綺麗な鳴り方は健在。この特徴が活きるハーフトーンは絶品で、決して引っこみすぎるようなこともありません。単音で弾いても倍音がギュッとまとまっていて太さを感じるので、音がポンと飛び出てくるような感覚すらあります。ブラックフェイス期のフェンダーアンプ、特に10″スピーカーと6L6パワー管の組み合わせを用いているヴァイブロラックス・リヴァーブやスーパー・リヴァーブなんかはどう考えても相性がいいはずです。少し歪みを足してあげれば前述した高音域の倍音がさらに際立つでしょう。

My pick for today is…
I don’t know about you, but I’m digging this Ocean Turquoise Metallic finish. The tone is a bit darker, a bit greener than other OTMs, and the checking really brings out a nice vintage vibe. It’s a ’66 style Strat, meaning it’s got the large-sized headstock and “transition” logo. I know some of you are die-hard early 60’s “Spaghetti” logo + small headstock fans, but I’m personally cool with late 60’s design. As a matter of fact, I actually think this Strat is pretty good-looking.
The difficult and also fun part about guitars is that often times looks can be deceiving. You can’t really tell how it’s going to sound just by looking at it. Some guitars are just total let-downs, and sometimes you can hardly accept the fact that such a good-looking guitar would sound so bad. It happens.
Well, I started playing it, and in a few seconds and I knew this one has the tone of a Masterbuilt. Yuriy Shishkov definitely nailed it. The sonically balanced tone of the gray-bobbin pickups aren’t overly bright, yet the shimmer and sparkle is there. The mixed-pickup positions sound fantastic. The single notes are tight and focused, and they pop out. It’ll definitely sound killer with a blackface Fender amp, especially those 10″ speaker/6L6 models like the Vibrolux Reverb or Super Reverb. Throw in a little dirt and things will be even better.
